The Summer is closing, and a new quarter is just a month away. Schedules will return to hectic, if they haven't stayed that way over the whole of the summer, so I encourage you to take time to relax. CGSA is holding a camping trip. We encourage everyone who can come on August 22-23 to do so; it should be a time of adventure, recreation, contemplation, and growing friendship. All are welcome to attend. Costs and further details will be sent out in another e-mail just about the trip.

This Friday, Gary and Peggy will be speaking to us about living on a budget. There are many problems with being constrained to a budget, one of the main ones which is self control. How do budgets relate to the Christian life? How does a couple, or an individual, form a budget? What are the common pitfalls in budgeting? How should a person account for charitable donations? What about marriages where partners have different budgeting philosophies?

Gary Nielsen is on staff with InterVarsity in Columbus, Ohio, and he and his wife Peggy are very involved in coordinating volunteer work. Gary and Peggy have seven children. They both love to travel, having been to dozens of countries.

We will be meeting at 6:30 on Friday at Summit United Methodist Church on 16th Ave.

As usual, we will be going out to eat at a place voted upon by those who answer a CGSA online poll. The poll has been sent out through the Yahoo group, and we encourage you to vote if you plan to attend; those who do not vote cannot complain about the selection. If you are not a member of the Yahoo group and would like to be, you can join through www.osu-cgsa.org .
This Friday, the topic will be Theology and Economics. A very broad and controversial question must be asked: does God prefer a certain economic system? Is Capitalism intrinsically more Christian, or more easily compatible with Christianity than other economic systems? Is socialism and communism necessarily immoral? Does God even concern Himself about economics? Is it ethical to make a profit? Is the minimum wage mandated by the Scriptures? It certainly seems that God is concerned about wages paid to workers, as two serious sins center around this very issue.

Guiding us with a framework which we can use to address these questions is our own John Acker. John Acker is a first-year PhD student in English, having completed his MA this past quarter. Though his official field is 19th-century American literature, he has also written and spoken on academic blogging, Christianity and intellectualism, Christianity and literature, and most recently on the relationship between hermeneutics and textual authority in Wieland (1798), an early American novel. In its current incarnation, John's dissertation project examines the relationship between Scripture and textual authority in the works of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Herman Melville. He is currently co-president of CGSA, and when not attending meetings or answering emails enjoys crushing the computer at Scrabble, watching TV shows on DVD, and arguing with liberals and/or libertarians. John's talk will outline some ways in which theologians have understood the relationship between economics and Christian faith, and address the question of whether (and to what extent) capitalism and Christianity go hand in hand.

We will be meeting at 6:30 on Friday at Summit United Methodist Church on 16th Ave.

As usual, we will be going out to eat at a place voted upon by those who answer a CGSA online poll.
This Friday, Sara Ray will be speaking on Tithing, its place in stewardship, and its role in the Christian life. Is tithing mandated, what makes it good, and what if anything is special about 10%? Also, is it tithing if the money set aside is going somewhere besides your local church community? Could someone tithe to a charity or other organization?

Sara will be addressing what the Bible says about tithing. She is a graduate student here at OSU finishing up as a theorist in the Physical Chemistry Group, and is a very active member and planner in CGSA. It will be a treat to hear her speak about this important and very Biblical subject.

We will be meeting at 6:30 on Friday at Summit United Methodist Church on 16th Ave.

As usual, we will be going out to eat at a place voted upon by those who answer a CGSA online poll. On deck for plenary presentations are students from English, biology, and music, and several students from the sciences and engineering will present posters as well. The main event will be in 2136 Newman-Wolfrom, which is at the corner of W 18th and College Rd. It is a secure building, so we will be meeting at around 6:30 at the courtyard nearby and Jon Helmus will let us in.
Friday, 05/23 @ CGSA

This is the last regular meeting of CGSA, and it is very near the end of the quarter. It feels as though it's gone by so quickly! We welcome you to a Friday of worship, prayer, and sharing how best we can live holistically as graduate students, active citizens, and authentic Christians.

THIS FRIDAY AT CGSA:

FRIDAY NIGHT (5/23/2008): We will all gather together to talk and enjoy refreshments between 6:30 and 6:45, and at about 6:45, we will quiet our hearts, and prepare ourselves to worship God, and learn more about His plan for our lives.

FOREIGN POLICY/TERRORISM: Terrorism is a very difficult topic, especially when coupled with foreign policy. How is terrorism even defined, and how is it separated from legitimate military action? Even if you haven't given much thought to a specific definition, most people know terrorism when they see it, from the evil assault on our nation in 9/11, to the bombing of trains in Madrid (11-M), IRA activity in Northern Ireland, and many actions by many groups before and after these events. How should the US construct a coherent and honorable foreign policy in light of attacks such as these, and with a mind to the fact that there are nations that would like nothing better than to see us destroyed or conquered? Should we be involved with the Middle East at all, and if so, how? What is legitimate action toward terrorists we capture, and what is legitimate treatment of the many unknown civilians who travel into our country every day?

Bryan Cole will be leading the discussion on this issue. Bryan is a member of CGSA, and a graduate student in political science.

TIME AND PLACE: Our meetings are at 6:30 pm in the Royer Student Activity Center. You can find it on the campus map at www.osu.edu/map/ Royer is located next to Jones Graduate Tower. Go into the building through the left of the two front entrances. At the top of the steps you will see a room to your right. That's where we'll be.

After the meeting, we will go out to a restaurant chosen from a poll in Yahoo groups, and revealed at the beginning of the meeting. To join this group, so that you can vote, or for more information about CGSA and its activities this quarter, please go to http://www.osu-cgsa.org/

END-OF-YEAR PARTY, SATURDAY MAY 31: At Weinland Park we will be celebrating the end of the school year. There will be food and games, centered around a Science Fiction theme; you are encouraged to dress up as your favorite Sci-Fi character. There will also be the passing of the pineapple, and a recognition of those who are graduating, either with the PhD, or on into the next phase of their program.

As it turns out, and as most of us know (but maybe don't often think about), not all immigration, and not even most immigration (compare DHS LPR_FR_2007 with an extrapolation of the Pew Hispanic Center work to find that about 750,000 illegal immigrants are entering this country every year, and over a million persons became legal permanent residents of the US in 2007), is illegal. Not all of it is what is quaintly termed ``unskilled labor''. Indeed, a few members of CGSA are immigrants or non-permanent residents.

A panel of immigrants and non-permanent residents, members of CGSA, will be speaking on immigration, their thoughts on the US policies toward legal and illegal immigration, and how to view this issue as an informed Christian.

TIME AND PLACE: Our meetings are at 6:30 pm in the Royer Student Activity Center.
FRIDAY NIGHT (5/9/2008): We will all gather together to talk and enjoy refreshments between 6:30 and 6:45, and at about 6:45, we will quiet our hearts, and prepare ourselves to worship God, and learn more about His plan for our lives.

ABORTION: A serious tragedy in our own country and around the world is the high rate of abortion, of killing unborn infants, that takes place in many hospitals and clinics in the United States. Millions of lives have been lost, often for the sake of another's convenience, and at the hands of faceless corporations. But many of the legal and political issues surrounding this crisis are complex. Being pro-choice is not the same as being pro-abortion, so is it acceptable to allow women the choice in this matter, even if they choose the wrong one?
Also, illegal abortions are often far less safe or sanitary, and can result in deeper suffering both for the child and for the woman, and a higher rate of death for the woman. There are also other complications, such as whether abortion would be justified in the cases of rape, incest, serious deformity, or to save the life of the mother.

Dr. Sullivan will be helping us sort out these complex issues, and guiding us through how we should think about abortion, about abortion policy and legislation, and about what we can and should do as Christians to consider and confront this exceptionally serious problem facing our nation and world. Dennis M. Sullivan received his M.D. from Case Western Reserve, and M.A. in Bioethics from Trinity Graduate School in Deerfield IL. He is a professor at Cederville University in biology, specializing in bioethics, with extensive medical-missionary service in Haiti and Africa. His daughter, Julie Sullivan, is a part of CGSA.

TIME AND PLACE: Our meetings are at 6:30 pm in the Royer Student Activity Center.
