Friday, October 30, 2009, 09:22 AM - Friday Meetings
We will not have a regular meeting of CGSA this Friday evening--so you will not find anyone at PAES 103--at least from CGSA.
Instead we will gather at 6:30 pm at Gary & Peggy Nielsen's for a fun evening of pumpkin carving. The evening will begin with your choice of Peggy's legendary soups and then proceed to the fun of hollowing out pumpkins and carving faces and other interesting designs into them. There will be judging and prizes! This may sound like an odd way to spend a Friday night for some but the food, community and fun will lift your heart (and fill your tummy!).
BYOP! Just a reminder, this is a Bring Your Own Pumpkin event (although there will probably be a few extras so come no matter what).
Directions: Gary and Peggy live at 542 Blenheim Road, Columbus, OH 43214. Google, Mapquest or your GPS will help you find it. Basically, this is north of campus, then East (right) off of High Street between N Broadway and Henderson Roads. There are two large bushes on the tree lawn of Gary & Peggy's.
Rides: If you need a ride from campus, meet in the northeast lot of the Stadium at 6:15.
Next Week: We will be back at PAES 103. Stephanie Cheng will be speaking on the life and work of Olivier Messiaen, a composer, as part of our series on Great Christian Scholars.

Is the world of literary theory any place for a Christian? This week's installment in our 'Great Christian Scholars' series proposes that this indeed possible as exemplified in the work of Mikhail Bakhtin.
Our speaker this week is John Acker. John Acker is a third-year PhD student in the Department of English, and is currently coming up with many creative ways to avoid reading for his candidacy exams. His primary field is 19th-century American literature, and he plans to write his dissertation on representations of Christianity in Hawthorne, Melville, and Stowe. Next academic year, he plans to present a paper on Melville's use of Genesis at the International Conference on Narrative, based partly on the material he will discuss on Friday. John is a past president of CGSA, a neurotic INTJ, and will talk your ear off if you happen to mention chess, checkers, politics, or Scrabble.
John writes this about his presentation:
John's topic is the life and work of Mikhail Bakhtin, a 20th-century Russian philosopher and literary theorist. While the specifics of Bakhtin's beliefs are a matter of some scholarly debate, his theories do offer interesting and potentially fruitful frameworks for understanding both textual and personal interactions between religious authority and personal beliefs. Accordingly, part of John's talk will use Bakhtin's theories to illustrate this process, using the character of Ishmael as a case study.
TIME AND PLACE: We meet at 6:30 pm on Friday at PAES (Physical Activities & Educational Services) 103. The link provides a campus map. PAES is connected to and just east of RPAC, our recreation facility. Come in the front door of PAES (one should be unlocked and we may have some friendly faces out to welcome!). Room 103 is the first room on the left just inside the front door.
FREE DINNER! This week, a small group from Stephanie Cheng's church is providing dinner after our meeting. So bring your appetite! Thanks, Stephanie.
PUMPKIN CARVING NEXT WEEK. Ready for something different with the new friends you've met at CGSA? Next Friday, instead of our regular meeting, we will be PUMPKIN CARVING at the home of Gary and Peggy Nielsen, 542 Blenheim Road, Columbus, OH 43214. We will meet at their home at 6:30 pm, kicking off the evening with a helping of one of Peggy's fantastic soups! After a good dinner comes the pumpkin carving (which includes roasting the pumpkin seeds for snacks!). And there will be judging!
This is a BYOP (Bring Your Own Pumpkin) event. I'd encourage you to pick one up this weekend while there are still plenty around. For those who need rides, we will have a signup at this Friday's meeting. Those needing rides should meet in the northeast corner of the stadium lot at 6:15.

Galileo Galilei is often associated with the suppression of scientific inquiry. The truth is more complex. Galileo was a devout Christian and many Christians within the church supported his discoveries. Unfortunately, he ended up associated with the wrong side in church politics--yes this happened even then!
This Friday, we will explore the life of Galileo in our "Great Christian Scholars" series. Paul Rimmer, a Ph.D candidate in Physics and former president of CGSA will be our speaker. Come learn more about this great scientist, his faith, and the controversy surrounding his work.
TIME AND PLACE: We meet at 6:30 pm on Friday at PAES http://www.osu.edu/map/building.php?building=245 (Physical Activities & Educational Services) 103. The link provides a campus map. PAES is connected to and just east of RPAC, our recreation facility. Come in the front door of PAES (one should be unlocked and we may have some friendly faces out to welcome!). Room 103 is the first room on the left just inside the front door.
FREE DINNER: This Friday is Pizza Night at CGSA. We will be ordering in pizza that will be served after the meeting (and free means no charge!). We've had some great conversations after meetings and we hope you will join us for good food and community.
APPLE PICKING ON SATURDAY! This Saturday, October 17, we will be going Apple Picking at Lynd's Fruit Farm http://lyndfruitfarm.com/main/, located east of Columbus. We will be meeting to drive out to Lynd's at 1 pm on Saturday in the northeast corner of the Stadium parking lot at Ohio State. Directions will be provided. Prices are $10 for a 10 lb bag, $16 for a 20 lb bag (most of us find 10 pounds of apples are plenty!). Afterwards, any who are interested can join us at Paul and Jona's to bake pies and other apple desserts and to hang out together.
SALT groups forming! Stephanie Cheng has been contacting new and returning members about forming these discipline specific groups. If you haven't received an email and are interested in a small group, contact Steph at boandsteph@yahoo.com.
YAHOO GROUP. Speaking of Yahoo, if you go to the contact us page at the CGSA website (www.osu-cgsa.org) you can join our Yahoo group. This is a group set up so that anyone connected with CGSA can post to about stuff your selling, events you want us to know about, roommate needs, help needed moving--or other posts to our grad community. This keeps our Google group for 'official' announcements for those who just want that.

The past two weeks, we've considered a vision for God's call in our lives and community as Christian scholars. For the remainder of the quarter we are turning to historical examples of Great Christian Scholars. This week, our subject is Thomas Aquinas, author of the Summa Theologica and considered by many the father of scholasticism. Many questions surround his life, including why he was nicknamed 'the dumb ox', whether scholasticism was a good thing, and why, at the end of his life, he considered all of his writing 'straw'.
Our speaker for this week is uniquely suited to address the life of Aquinas. Fr. Pius Pietrzyk, OP, is a Catholic Priest and a member of the Order of Preachers (the "Dominicans"), a religious order founded by St. Dominic de Guzman in the 13th century. Fr. Pius received his undergraduate degree in English and Philosophy from the University of Arizona and his law degree from the University of Chicago. After practicing corporate law for a number of years, he left the practice to pursue priestly studies and eventually entered the Dominican Order. He obtained his theology degrees from the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception, the Dominican's own seminary in Washington, DC.
There, he earned his Licentiate in Sacred Theology. The subject of his Licentiate thesis was "God's Knowing and Loving and the Interrelationality of Being according to St. Thomas Aquinas". Fr. Pius is currently the Parochial Vicar at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in
Zanesville, OH.

FREE DINNER: Once again, we will have food after the meeting brought in by some local friends of CGSA. We've had great times of conversation over good food these past weeks. From what I hear, this Friday will be no exception!

Also, we still have FREE copies of A Mind for God for any who have not received one. The book answers how we can love God through our scholarship (and has a great set of reading lists at the end!). Just stop by our CGSA meetings (while supplies last!).

to this him and his family spent a number of years as missionaries in
Thailand. He will be speaking about the history of Christianity in
Asia, specifically in China.

and then get into our theme for the evening. Afterward, we head out
