We will be concluding the session on Church history with a discussion
on the Church in Asia. From the legendary journey of the Apostle
Thomas, to Catholic missions, to Protestant missions, Asia has had a
rich Christian history, with great triumphs of the faith, especially
in the face of pervasive and horrific persecutions. Pastor Tim Walter
will be speaking on this topic.
Tim Walter is Senior Pastor of All Nations Christian Fellowship. Prior
to this him and his family spent a number of years as missionaries in
Thailand. He will be speaking about the history of Christianity in
Asia, specifically in China.
WHEN? Fridays at 6:30 pm. We gather for munchies and conversation
and then get into our theme for the evening. Afterward, we head out
to an inexpensive restaurant.

The Church has a rich involvement, overwhelmingly positive, sometimes
negative, with the University, in founding, maintaining, challenging,
and enriching University life and work. Bob Trube will be speaking
about this involvement from a historical perspective. Bob has been for
years an Inter-Varsity staff worker, a strong spiritual mentor, a
close friend, and a blessing and moving force in CGSA. We hope you can
make it.

We now turn primarily to the Church in America, and look at the
restoration and other distinctive movements here in this New Land,
movements very-much toward the restoration of the Church as it was
during Christ's time on earth. John Acker, a PhD student in English,
will be talking about this very rich and important time in Christian
history, a time that shares much commonality with many current
Christian movements, such as the emergent discussion.

Our study returns now to the West. We come to the end of the Western
perspective on the Schism, to another great tragedy in Church history,
though one not totally without fruit. Jonathan Helmus, PhD Student in
Chemical Physics, will be discussing the Reformation.

Last week, we got to hear from the Western perspective about the history of the Church during and after the schism. As much was going on in the development of the Church in the West, the Eastern Church, though under heavy persecution from the Muslims (and sometimes even from Rome), cultivated a living and thriving faith of a theological character beautifully distinct from the West. This week, Fr. Terry, a priest at St. Chrysostom Byzantine Catholic Church, will be talking about the Great Schism: Eastern Perspective.
