Resources for Christian Intellectualism
Friday, June 29, 2007, 05:06 PM
Here are some articles, organizations, and other resources you may find helpful as we think about and discuss the interplay between Christian faith and intellectual life.

1. The Emerging Scholars Network, a group affiliated with the Graduate and Faculty Ministry branch of Intervarsity, offers a multitude of great information and resources for Christian intellectuals, no matter what your discipline or degree. Here you'll find articles on intellectual life (including Bob Trube's "Seven Habits"), opportunities for mentoring, some great discounts on relevant periodicals, and much more. Membership is free.

2. World View Studies Blog, run by John Acker, contains several articles about worldview and intellectual engagement, including the manuscript from his recent talk here at CGSA.

3. James Sire, who spoke to CGSA this past November, has published many useful books at Intervarsity Press about worldview analysis, Christian intellectualism, and, of course, the discipleship of the mind. Other good sources for books on these subjects include IVP Academic, Eerdmans, Baker Books, and Zondervan.

4. Leadership University, a part of Campus Crusade's Christian Leadership Ministries, includes articles on the humanities, social sciences, science/technology, theology, and academic integration of faith . Don't miss their Worldview Bibliography, assembled by Dr. David K. Naugle.

5.Boundless Webzine, while not exclusively on academic/intellectual topics, covers a lot of topics relevant and important to those in "the time between the home of your youth and the home you'll make for yourself someday." Be sure to visit Dr. Theophilus' Office Hours while you're there (his articles since 2005 can be found at TrueU.

6. Think Christian has blog posts on everything from apologetics to justice to youth ministry. Worth a visit.

Friday Hune 29 at CGSA
Thursday, June 28, 2007, 01:33 PM - Friday Meetings
We are now into the second week of summer for CGSA, and will be
switching gears a bit, discussing Christian Discipline, specifically,
the discipline of observing the Sabbath. We welcome all of you to
discuss this very important and often forgotten part of being a
Christian disciple, especially in this 24/7/365 schedule much of
Academia encourages.

TITLE: "Spiritual Discipline: Sabbath"

SPEAKER: Our very own Bob Trube.

SUMMERY: Bob will be addressing is God's response to the hectic
lifestyle that has increasingly become the norm in American life, and
particularly American university life. In a word, the response is
"Stop"--for one day in seven. He'll be talking about the practice of
sabbath and practical ideas for practicing God's sane rhythm of work
and rest in an insane world.

DATE: Friday, June 29, 2007

TIME: 6:30 PM

LOCATION: Summit Methodist Church

We also typically go out to eat after the talk, and we welcome you to
join us. Suggestions will be taken by me at the end of the meeting.

Friday June 22 at CGSA
Friday, June 22, 2007, 08:46 AM - Friday Meetings
We would like to welcome you to the Summer Quarter of CGSA. The topic
for the summer will be the intellectual Christian. We will be
structuring Friday meetings around "A Mind for God" by James Emery
White, and the first meeting will be an introduction on "A Mind for
God".

This meeting will begin with a short (10-15 minutes) summary of the
retreat this past weekend.

TITLE: "Introduction: A Mind for God"

SPEAKER: John Acker is a graduate student in the English Department. His primary research interests are American literature and narrative theory.

SUMMARY: John's talk, entitled "A Mind for God," focuses on why
Christian intellectualism-- what James Sire calls the "discipleship of
the mind"-- is both beneficial and necessary to our lives as Christian
graduate students. Since the academy rightly demands intellectual
vigor and responsibility from each of us, John argues, we should
develop that vigor because of our faith, not in spite of it.

DATE: Friday, June 22, 2007

TIME: 6:30 PM

LOCATION: Summit Methodist Church

We also typically go out to eat after the talk, and we welcome you to
join us. Suggestions will be taken by me at the end of the meeting.
