This Friday night's CGSA meeting will focus on Christianity and Environmental Science. Our speaker is Dr. Greg Hitzhusen. He is the Executive Director of Ohio Interfaith Power and Light and also on the faculty at The Ohio State University, in the School of Environment and Natural Resources, where he is developing a partnership between the Ohio Council of Churches and Ohio State University Extension to provide environmental resources to faith communities in Ohio. Dr. Hitzhusen has a B.S. in ecology from Cornell University, an M.Div. concentrating in ecotheology from Yale Divinity School, and a Ph.D. in faith-based environmental education (Cornell).
Greg will speak not only on how is faith has influenced his thinking about environmental science but also how both his faith and research have affect the way he lives.
Time and Place: Our Friday meetings are at 6:30 pm at the Royer Student Activity Center on North Campus next to Jones Tower. After our meetings we go out to a local restaurant.
Special Events Next Week! We will not have a meeting next Friday. One of our members, Alisha Leighanne Miller will be giving her DMA recital at 8 pm next Friday evening, June 5 at Hughes Hall. You all are invited and I know a large CGSA crowd would be very encouraging.
Then Saturday afternoon, we will have the end of the year picnic at our home. More info about theme, food, directions and time to follow. But save the date!

This Friday Meeting: "Methodological Atheism: Christian Scholars and God's Intervention" There seems to have been, especially in the wake of World War 2, a surge in the number of atheists, and in their militant attitude; recently, they have found especially caustic mouth-pieces in Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and the like.
What is the "new atheism" and what is the responsibility of Christian Scholars in addressing and answering this aggressive, almost 'evangelical', movement?
Please welcome our speaker Pastor Adam Long of Continuum Church, who is also working on his PhD in Sociology.
The Meetings begin around 6:30 PM on Fridays. Typically there are people here before, and we talk and catch up with each other's weeks and lives until about 6:50 PM. At that time, we come together, the meeting is introduced, and we worship by singing songs. Then we open in prayer, and the speaker is introduced. After she or he is done talking (typically 8:00 to 8:30 PM) there are announcements, another song of worship, and then a closing prayer. Then all who wish will go out to eat at a place chosen by a poll (sign up to the Yahoo group on osu-cgsa.org to see the polls in the future). The poll decision will be announced at the meeting.

I. This Friday Meeting: "Christianity and Social Work"
When we think of social work, we may think of activism, charity, corporal works of mercy, or other works along this line. I certainly think often that social work is a natural outflow from a deep and active Christian faith. But if that is the case, why do so many non-Christians become involved in social work? What is the overlap between Christianity and social work, and where do they diverge? How is a Christian social worker different from a non-Christian social worker, in the way they approach and perform their occupation? And what is the purpose or ultimate goal of social work?
Please welcome as our speaker Millie Harris. Millie is working on her PhD in Social Work and is an active member of Vineyard Columbus. She will be talking about the issues of how social work relates to the Christian life.

You are invited to a discussion on bioethics, specifically on a Christian's perspective on stem cell research, and then after to dinner and watching some movies at Gary and Peggy's home.

I. This Friday Meeting: "A Christian biologist's perspective on the stem cell debate" Jona Hilario, a graduate student in the Biology department, will be speaking on the topic of bioethics, specifically how one Christian approaches the issue of Stem Cell research. This is a very relevant topic especially for our times, and is surrounded by difficult ethical questions: can a Christian ethically support stem cell research? Can a Christian do research with embryonic stem cells, or use results directly obtained through embryonic stem-cell research?
We invite you to join us in discussing these and other issues.

There is no dinner poll this week. Instead, thanks to Gary and Peggy's warm hospitality, we will be going to their place for dinner and to watch movies. Please bring some movies of your own to widen the selection.
Their home (542 Blenheim Rd. Columbus, OH 43214) is a 10-15 drive from campus, so rides will be made available. If you would like to drive yourself, please e-mail me or google for directions.

II. May 8: Coffeehouse!
We will be meeting next week (same time, same place) for pizza, snacks, and karaoke. Last year this was one of the most memorable and enjoyable social events. We ask you to invite friends and colleagues to join us. And if you want to bring some snacks, games, or to help out with set up and clean up, please let me know by e-mail, or show up this Friday to sign up for a task.
