Friday, 02/22 @ CGSA
Friday, February 22, 2008, 10:04 AM - Friday Meetings
It is that time after Midterms, slowly marching (or sometimes
careening) toward Finals and the end of class for the Quarter (for those of us still taking classes). Many exciting things are happening right now for CGSA. The square dance was a huge success, and all had a wonderful time. Tonight, CGS is hosting a Gala, which will be one of the meal options to vote upon in the poll tonight. And CGSA and Amnesty International will be holding a joint event, a panel discussion on Religious Freedom, concentrating on the 18th Article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. A very exciting, busy time right now in this quarter for all. So it is definitely good Friday is upon us, so we can relax in the evening, and concentrate on the Word of God, with song, in the silence of prayer, and in reading the Scriptures. Snacks, fellowship, and Gala food after.

UPCOMING EVENT: RELIGIOUS FREEDOM PANEL - This next event will occur on Saturday, February 23, at 7 PM. Bo Chamberlain of Amnesty International will be moderating a discussion between four prominent speakers on issues of religious freedom, concentrating on the universal declaration of human rights. The speakers will represent freedom for Christians, Muslims, Hindus, and Freethinkers. Dinner will be provided, and it will be delicious. This discussion is relevant to much that is happening in every part of the world, and coming up with potential solutions is difficult and risky. If you are available Saturday the 23rd, there is no better place to be. An e-mail to the Yahoo Group includes a copy of the flier, a few of us will be going out this afternoon (probably around 3 PM) to hand out information on this event at the Oval (e-mail if interested), and fliers will be available either through me (e-mail me if you want some to hand out today), or at the meeting this evening.

In preparation for this sensitive and controversial event, there is nothing better than prayer. You are welcome to join us a half hour before the meeting (6 PM) to pray over this event.

THIS FRIDAY AT CGSA:

FRIDAY NIGHT (2/8/2008): We will all gather together to talk and enjoy refreshments between 6:30 and 6:45, and at about 6:45, we will quiet our hearts, and prepare ourselves to worship God, and learn more about His plan for our lives.

MISSION STATEMENT FOR A KINGDOM: Some of the most harrowing words in Scripture. "Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?" The Church Suffering, the Martyrs, those who are poor and mentally disabled, the lowest in our society. These share in the cup Jesus was to drink. Can we drink the cup he was to drink? The scripture we will look upon is Matthew 20:1-28. This has the parable about the workers and their wages, the mother of the Sons of Zebedee who bid Jesus to make her sons sit on his right and left, that harrowing quote, and the mysterious instruction that in the Kingdom of Heaven, those who wish to be first shall become the servants of all the rest.

Jonathan Helmus will be guiding us through this passage. Jonathan is a Physical Chemist, in this third year of Graduate School, working on Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy. He has the rare gift of being able to read the New Testament in the original language, and has lead the Jones Tower Bible Study for almost since he first came to OSU. He is the Treasurer of CGSA, and a beloved friend and brother in Christ.

TIME AND PLACE: Our meetings are at 6:30 pm in the Royer Student Activity Center. You can find it on the campus map at www.osu.edu/map/ Royer is located next to Jones Graduate Tower. Go into the building through the left of the two front entrances. At the top of the steps you will see a room to your right. That's where we'll be.

There is another poll this week, and it's not too late to vote. Just register with the Yahoo CGSA group (and get many other announcements of events not directly related to official CGSA events), and vote for the place you would like to eat. You can sign up on http://www.osu-cgsa.org/ If you have any questions, please e-mail me.

A new "restaurant selection" is available on the poll. CGS is hosting a Mardi Gras Gala at the RPAC from 8pm-2am. It is absolutely free for OSU graduate students and their guests (who do not have to be students). There will be food, prizes, activities, and dancing all throughout the night. Vote if you are interested in going.

Friday 02/15 @ CGSA - Square Dance!
Thursday, February 14, 2008, 02:09 PM - Friday Meetings
Giddy up Buckeroos (or some acceptable variant),

It's time for the CGSA Square Dance! Get out your best dancin' clothes and shoes and join us for a time of fun, dance, and fellowship this Friday at 6:30 PM at the Royer Center (http://www.osu.edu/map/building.php?building=183). The Royer Center will be decorated for the event, and a professional caller will be present to lead us in square dancing. There will be snacks, drinks, and good times. No dance experience is necessary, a good thing for people like me who have never square danced before. Invite your friends and coworkers to relax this weekend, and come dance with us.

A square dance is an amalgamation of primarily western European folk dances that migrated into the United States and have taken on a particularly American flavor. It is a dance enjoyed in the United States and around the world.

COMING UP: RELIGIOUS FREEDOM PANEL:
With the square dance upon us this Friday night, it is already time to start thinking about our next event.

The Religious Freedom Panel Discussion will be held on Saturday, February 23rd. We would like to treat this event in the spirit of conversation and cuisine. Therefore, we need your help to provide some of the food for the event. The main courses will be provided by the funds we received from the University.

Friday 02/01 @ CGSA
Friday, February 1, 2008, 12:50 PM - Friday Meetings
The quarter is flying by; winter quarter seems to move at a lightning pace. Midterms have already come upon those of us who still take classes, or at least are right around the corner, and the end of the quarter is in sight. During these hectic times, it is more important than ever to come again to enjoy Christian fellowship, and some dancing.

UPCOMING EVENT: SQUAREDANCE - Get out your dancing shoes and prepare to tare up the floor during our Squaredance, an event that will take the place of the regular Friday meeting on February 15, same time (6:30), same place. For those who might be worried in the same spirit as a brother in Christ, Jimmy Akin, who said, "I mean, there was no way that I'd be able to do the fearsome Load The Boat or the dreaded Teacup Chain or the sanity-shattering Relay The Deucey or the soul-destroying Spin Chain And Exchange The Gears." this will be a beginner's square dance (good especially for me since I've never done it before), with lessons and explanations before, and slow calls during. There will be refreshments, community, laughs, and a roarin'
good time! All are invited!

THIS FRIDAY AT CGSA:

FRIDAY NIGHT (1/4/2008): We will all gather together to talk and enjoy refreshments between 6:30 and 6:45, and at about 6:45, we will quiet our hearts, and prepare ourselves to worship God, and learn more about His plan for our lives.

FASTING: With the Lenten season also on our heels (next Wendesday is Ash Wednesday), topics of mortification, discipline, self-denial, all come to the fore. These is often difficult topics, mostly because they are not as theoretical as intellectual Christians would like them to be; even if one can assent to them in principle, these issues scream out to be practiced. This week, we have Mary Kauffman talking about fasting, and about the role this discipline plays in her life, especially since she came from a non-fasting church background.

Mary spent the past last three years as the Minister of Church Development at QUEST Community Church a 900 member Vineyard church located in New Albany, OH. Her focus was to cultivate an attitude of "service" at Quest and ensure that ministries are aligned with the church vision and properly resourced. She also helped set and implement goals in partnership with leaders to cultivate spiritual growth in support of the global Quest vision. All the while she ministered to many people the saving love and healing presence of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. Mary comes to us tonight to speak about the topic of fasting as a self-professing "student-in-training" of this vital spiritual discipline.

Upon completion of her assignment at Quest, she is currently on sabbatical as she is working toward graduating from The Ashland Theological Seminary with a Masters of Divinity in June of 2008. She also contributed to a book written in Association with the Sandberg Leadership Center at Ashland called Leadership Character, which was published in 2002.

TIME AND PLACE: Our meetings are at 6:30 pm in the Royer Student
Activity Center. You can find it on the campus map at www.osu.edu/map/
Royer is located next to Jones Graduate Tower. Go into the building

until 8 pm, then visit and go out for dinner at an inexpensive
restaurant in the area.
